New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said his only regret after Friday’s loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 1 of the World Series was not the fact that Luke Weaver went down in the 10th inning.

“Do I put Weave in front on third down… in the tenth? That’s the only reason I can certainly justify it,” Boone told reporters Saturday when asked if he had made up his mind that he would do it. I would like to go back to game 1.

“Worry a little bit about that third part with them, and then where that leaves us if it doesn’t go to plan… it’s this one. But not the others, I would double the pace. “

Weaver ended the eighth inning and retired three batters in order in the ninth, but Boone singled to Jake Cousins and then Nestor Cortes in the tenth frame.

After Cortes returned from more than a month off due to an elbow injury, Cortes’ second pitch was hit by the Dodgers’ Freddie Freeman for a grand slam.

Weaver originally entered the game to face Mookie Betts with the score tied for third and only one on the board. After Betts scored Shohei Ohtani on a sacrifice fly, Freeman hit a fly ball to end the inning.

In the ninth set, Weaver forced Teoscar Hernandez, Max Muncy and Enrique Hernandez into jumps and jumps.

However, Weaver has only thrown two complete innings only once this postseason, in the Yankees’ Game 5 ALCS victory over the Cleveland Guardians. Boone retired him after 1.2 frames to put Cousins on the mound in the tenth.

Cousins walked Gavin Lux with a single off the board and then allowed Tommy Edman to score before being subbed out in favor of Cortes, who last pitched on Sept. 18 before suffering an injury at UCL.

The Yankees led by one run when Boone made the controversial decision to walk Betts, loading the bases with one run remaining.

In the ninth inning, allowing an intentional walk worked for the Dodgers as they allowed Juan Soto to get on base before forcing Aaron Judge to pop out.

The same tactic didn’t work for the Yankees either. Freeman hit his grand slam on Cortes’ next pitch.

Weaver’s reliability as a closer was a key part of the Yankees’ World Series chance. He has recorded four saves in nine appearances, and outside of his struggles in Game 3 of the ALCS, he has been consistently solid.

Given Boone’s regrets after Game 1, the pressure could be on Weaver to finish Game 2 if the Yankees have a similar late lead on Saturday night in Los Angeles.
