Liam Lawson shares Yuki Tsunoda’s details on his return to F1

Liam Lawson said he had been using his teammate Yuki Tsunoda’s data “all weekend” in preparation for the Mexican Grand Prix.

Lawson qualified 12th while Tsundoa crashed out of the race at the end of the second session, but the Kiwi said he was taking note of what his more experienced teammate was doing.

Lawson returned to F1 in Austin and scored points, but as he is the newest addition to the grid, the New Zealander is using all available information to gain momentum.

“It’s good to have a fast teammate and be able to use his data,” Lawson told media, including PlanetF1.com in Mexico. “And honestly, that’s what we did all weekend.

“So it was useful. I think the extra time this weekend helped, so it’s a shame we didn’t finish a lap earlier.”

It was Tsunoda’s crash that ended Lawson’s Q3 hopes, but the New Zealander still has a chance to score points on Sunday.

“We are close to the points and it looks good in the long run. So hopefully we can move forward.

“We are building and I think we were there in qualifying, which is a shame (they didn’t make Q3). Honestly, I think the team worked extremely hard and gave us a really fast car this weekend, so I think they deserve two cars, if not one, in Q3.”

As for Tsunoda, he explained that his accident in Q2 was due to him getting stuck on the approach to the stadium section and unable to slow the car down enough to negotiate the corner.

“At the beginning my front was locked and I lost a lot of control. So blocking the front meant the end of the match and I had no opportunity to take a corner kick.

“So that was weird. I didn’t push too hard there and I didn’t have any front lockup on any lap in that corner all week. It surprised me, but it’s still a pity that I didn’t manage to take advantage of this opportunity.

“The strategy here won’t be easy, especially with the traffic and the temperature of the car, but I’m doing as much as I can. I think the car’s pace is still high, so I hope I can maximize it with clean air.

“In the previous race, my teammate came from behind in the points, so anything could have happened.”
