Grammy-winning rapper Lil Durk has been arrested on suspicion of ordering the 2022 murder of a rival leader of the Chicago rap collective Only the Family, federal prosecutors said.

According to the complaint, the arrest occurred Thursday near the airport where Lil Durk, whose real name is Durk Devontay Banks, was booked on a plane leaving the United States.

A lawyer representing the artist did not immediately respond to a request from Reuters for a statement in his defense.

Lil Durk made his first appearance in federal court in the Southern District of Florida on Friday and is expected to be arraigned in federal court in Los Angeles in the coming weeks, according to a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California. where the charges were brought.

The indictment alleges that Lil Durk, 32, is the suspect previously identified as co-conspirator No. 1 in the Oct. 17 indictment of five other suspects charged in connection with the 2022 murder.

The intended target was a man identified as having TB whom Lil Durk wanted to kill, prosecutors say.

The five remaining defendants learned that TB was in Los Angeles, tracked him there and opened fire, including with fully automatic weapons, but instead killed an associate identified as SR, the indictment says.

The complaint states that a dispute occurred in November 2020 at an Atlanta nightclub, during which an associate of TB shot another man and Lil Durk punched TB in revenge.

According to the indictment, it was one of many bounties Lil Durk placed on people he wanted dead.

Lil Durk won the 2024 Grammy Award for Best Melodic Rap Performance for “All My Life.” According to his social media, he released his ninth studio album on October 18.
