No. 4 Ohio State football outlasted Nebraska, 21-17

Nebraska football gave No. 4 Ohio State a scare, but that was all there was.

On Saturday, the Huskers lost 21-17 in Columbus. NU is currently 5-3 on the season and OSU is 6-1.

Nebraska is 0-6 in bowl-eligibility games in the Matt Rhule era. The Huskers have also lost 27 straight games against ranked opponents.

Ohio State went up 14-6 in the first half with two big passing plays and touchdowns. John Hohl broke the school record for field goal in a road game with a 54-yard field goal.

After the break, the Blacks gained the advantage. In the third quarter, Ohio State managed just 23 yards, had three long-range attempts and had one interception.

Meanwhile, Nebraska scored another Hohl field goal in the third quarter. Early in the fourth, the Huskers scored a decisive touchdown and two-point conversion for a 17-14 lead. It was the Big Red’s first fourth-quarter lead over an AP top-five opponent since the 2009 Big 12 Championship.

But Ohio State responded. The Buckeyes moved 75 yards in 4:43 on eight plays to take a 21-17 lead. After the teams exchanged points, Nebraska had the ball and had a chance to win.

Instead, officials continued to report. On the first play, Jahmal Banks was called for offensive pass interference. On the next play, Ohio State linebacker Reese Arvell was called for targeting, setting up NU at midfield. A false start penalty was immediately imposed.

With just over two minutes remaining, offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield returned to the source of the passes behind the line of scrimmage. The pass to Emmett Johnson was intercepted for a three-yard loss. Swing pass to the right to Johnson lost a yard. Then on a third-and-19, Dylan Raiola was thrown out, allowing the Buckeyes to end the game.

Oiho State totaled 285 yards on the day, barely outpacing Nebraska’s 273. The Buckeyes gained only 64 yards on the ground while the Huskers ran for 121 yards.

Raiola finished the game 21 of 32 for 152 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. Buckeyes QB Will Howard was 13 of 16 for 221 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.

Nebraska was called for seven penalties for 62 yards today, including two for offensive pass interference. Ohio State was called for five penalties, three of which were accepted for 36 yards. The Buckeyes weren’t called for a single offensive penalty.
