A roundabout in Mount Sterling dedicated to the memory of a teenager who died in a crash

MT. STERLING, Ky. (LEX 18) — The intersection that caused heartache for a Mount Sterling family has now been replaced with a roundabout, giving new hope and a telling sacrifice to Emilee-Grace Collins, who lost her life.

Three years ago, in May 2021, 16-year-old Emilee-Grace Collins was killed at the intersection of Indian Mound Drive and Spencer Lane in Mt Sterling, Kentucky.

Because the intersection was just a four-way stop with a flashing red light in the middle, it was known for dangerous accidents. Today this intersection is now a roundabout with a new dedication: The Emilee-Grace Collins Memorial Roundabout.

Denise Collins, Emilee-Grace’s mother, and community support pushed for this intersection to become a roundabout. Let’s hope we can prevent another accident like Emilee-Grace’s.

“I’m really happy that something great can come out of a bad situation,” Ms. Collins admits. “The community has been amazing since this happened. When Emilee died, everyone rallied together, wrapped their arms around us and supported us strongly. it was great for us.”

“Her mother was really committed to the project. I was a small part of it, but Emilee was such a big part of our lives for such a short period of time. We’re just grateful that this happened,” says Jamie Collins, Emilee-Grace’s dad.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet reports that roundabouts have 90% fewer fatal accidents than traditional intersections.

Mrs. Collins states that this sacrifice brings closure to the family and means that Emilee-Grace’s death will not be in vain.

“The tragedy of our daughter Emilee will save many, many lives. A lot more lives will be lost when we are gone and I think when we see this sign… it will have an impact on this community and this area. That this would somehow bring closure to the last three and a half years that we haven’t really had,” Mr. Collins admits.

“Be careful. Watch what you’re doing. Watch for other drivers and slow down,” Ms. Collins said.
