Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Holden Trent has died

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Holden Trent, a backup goalkeeper for the Philadelphia Union, died Saturday, the Major League Soccer club said in a statement. He was 25 years old.

The team did not provide a cause of death, but this week his family wrote on their Instagram account that he was in intensive care at the hospital.

“The Philadelphia Association is devastated by the heartbreaking death of Holden Trent,” the club said in a statement. “Although he was a great player and a fierce competitor.”

Trent, from Greensboro, North Carolina, was selected 28th overall in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft out of High Point University. Although he has not played in the first team yet, he has made several appearances for Union II this season.

“Major League Soccer joins the Philadelphia Association and our entire soccer community in mourning the tragic death of Union goalkeeper Holden Trent,” MLS wrote on X.
