Fighting

  • Ukrainian air defense units were deployed early Sunday morning to repel a wave of Russian drones heading toward Kiev, the mayor of the Ukrainian capital Vitaly Klitschko said, urging residents to stay in shelters.

  • Russia’s Defense Ministry said its air defense units destroyed at least 30 Ukrainian drones overnight over the southern regions of Voronezh, Bryansk, Orel, Lipetsk and Belgorod.

  • One woman was injured as a result of a drone attack on the border region of Belgorod, the region’s governor Vyacheslav Gladkov announced in the Telegram communication application. He added that several cars were also damaged.
  • Maksim Yegorov, governor of the Tambov region, about 450 km (280 miles) southeast of Moscow, said a Ukrainian drone came down in the Michurin region, sparking a short-lived fire but causing no injuries or property damage.
  • Russian forces further advanced into several towns in eastern Ukraine, including Selydove, moving closer to capturing the strategic town of Pokrovsk, Russian and Ukrainian bloggers report. Russian news site SHOT reported on Telegram that Russian troops control 80 percent of Selydove.

  • Russian military bloggers also reported that Russian forces were close to capturing the town of Kurakhovo southwest of Hirnik.

  • According to state news agency RIA Novosti, the Russian Defense Ministry said its forces had taken control of the settlement of Oleksandropol in eastern Ukraine.
  • In its Saturday evening report, Ukraine said its forces had repelled 36 Russian attacks on the Pokrovsk front line, including in the Selydove area, the previous day, while several battles were still ongoing.

  • A Russian glide bomb killed one person and injured three in Kostiantynivka near the front line in the Donetsk Oblast, the oblast’s governor said.
  • Russian shelling killed two people in a small town west of Ukrainian-controlled Kherson in the south.

Politics and diplomacy

  • A series of Russian attacks that have killed and injured civilians in Ukraine in recent days have prompted President Volodymyr Zelensky to once again call on Kyiv’s allies to step up political pressure on Moscow.
  • Group of Seven nations finance ministers have decided to step up efforts to prevent Russia from dodging sanctions imposed after its invasion of Ukraine following reports that Russian financial institutions had set up a network of overseas subsidiaries to facilitate trade in sanctioned goods.
  • The deployment of North Korean troops to help Russia in its war with Ukraine is unlikely to have a significant impact on fighting on the ground, but it could have implications for security interests in Asia, Europe and elsewhere, said Pascal Dayez-Burgeon, a Korea expert.
