HAMILTON, Ohio (WXIX) – A driver pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular manslaughter following a March crash that killed a Lakota West Freshman.

According to the Butler County Prosecutor’s Office, 18-year-old Rebecca Kumar was driving nearly three times the speed limit when the accident occurred on March 23.

The passenger in Kumar’s SUV was 14-year-old Laith Masri.

“The defendant was driving south on Verity Street near Hughes in Middletown at speeds approaching 103 mph in a 35 mph zone,” the prosecutor said in court Wednesday. “The defendant missed a curve in the road and left the roadway, overturning the Cadillac Escalade she was driving and landing the vehicle on a tree line. Laith Masri died on the spot.”

Masri was a student at Lakota West Freshman School, and there were several other people in the car, including Masri’s injured brother.

“He will never be able to play any sport or be in a situation where he would be hit or hit violently; He may then suffer life-threatening consequences,” the prosecutor explained.

A third passenger suffered a concussion and one person in the car lost consciousness after the accident.

Kumar pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide and three vehicular assaults and will be sentenced on January 15.
