Police say an Overland Park sexual assault suspect has been arrested

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (KCTV) – Overland Park police say a suspect has been arrested following a sexual assault and theft that began Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred in the area of ​​W. 97th and Reeder streets.

Police said the arrestee will be transported to the central booking facility in Johnson County. The case will then be forwarded to the Johnson County District Attorney’s Office.

On Wednesday evening, Gabriel P. Hernandez of Kansas City, Kansas, was booked into the Johnson County Detention Center on rape charges. He was arrested by Overland Park police on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., according to a booking log.

“I would like to thank our community, members of our department, the Johnson County Crime Laboratory, the Kansas City FBI Criminal Career Task Force and local media partners for their assistance in sharing the information we provided (Tuesday) regarding this horrific crime.” said Chief Doreen Jokerst. “I appreciate the collective efforts of all involved to keep the community safe.”

Police said the assault happened around 2:40 a.m. Tuesday at a home near West 97th Circle and Reeder Drive.

The victim was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
