The Philadelphia Union goalkeeper died in the first round at the age of 25

The team announced that Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Holden Trent died on Saturday.

He was 25 years old. No cause of death was given.

“The Philadelphia Association is devastated by the heartbreaking death of Holden Trent,” the team said in a statement. “While he was a great player and a fierce competitor, he was above all a devoted son, brother, fiancé and teammate who made everyone around him better. He embodied the true meaning of determination, dedication and perseverance and will be greatly missed. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, fiancée and friends.”

The family also shared this news on their Instagram.

“We want to thank everyone for your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” he added. – we read in the statement. “Holden died this afternoon surrounded by family and friends. Details regarding services and celebration of life will be announced soon.

“Our family is deeply moved to see and experience the love you all have for Holden,” the statement continued. “Love, Holden Family.”

Trent is from North Carolina and played collegiately at High Point. The union made him 28th overall in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft.

“Major League Soccer joins the Philadelphia Association and our entire soccer community in mourning the tragic death of Union goalkeeper Holden Trent,” the league said in a statement shared with X. “Trent, a young goalkeeper with a bright future, demonstrated determination and professionalism on a daily basis, contributing to Philadelphia’s close-knit goalie squad.

“We offer our deepest condolences to his fiancée, family and friends, teammates and the entire Philadelphia Union community. MLS is working with the club to provide players and family members with the resources and support they need during this tragic time.
