A man in a wheelchair was struck and killed Wednesday night while trying to cross U.S. Highway 49

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A man in a wheelchair died after being hit by a car Wednesday in south Kansas City, Missouri.

Police said the crash occurred while the man was trying to cross east to west on U.S. Highway 49 near the Red Bridge Road exit.

A silver Chevrolet Cruze traveling south on the highway veered off the right shoulder to give way to a fire truck traveling down the road with its lights and sirens activated.

Police said the car driver did not notice the man in the wheelchair and hit him.

The victim died a short time later in hospital.

His name has not been revealed.

According to police, the driver of the Chevrolet Cruze did not suffer any injuries.

This was the 84th traffic fatality of 2024 in Kansas City, Missouri.
