Latest news from the Middle East: Iran’s supreme leader responds to Israeli attacks; several dozen injured after a truck hit a bus stop | World news

Welcome back to our live coverage of events in the Middle East.

Gaza’s Hamas-led health ministry says Israeli attacks on the northern city of Beit Lahiya last night killed at least 22 people – more on that in a moment.

We will also provide an update on the fallout from Israeli attacks on military facilities in Iran as we focus on Tehran’s response – if it responds at all.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghci suggested in a social media post that a response was not out of the question.

He said: “We fully reserve the right to respond appropriately to this aggression, which cannot be separated from Israel’s genocide in Gaza and the bloodshed in Lebanon.”

The Israeli military said its attacks were in response to “months of sustained attacks by the regime in Iran against the state of Israel.”

According to Reuters news agency, satellite images appeared to show that the Israeli attack targeted buildings used to mix ballistic missile fuel in Iran.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisted they chose targets in Iran based on their own interests and not on “American dictates,” while Joe Biden expressed hope that Israeli attacks would end the cycle of escalation between the two sides.
