Five cops sued by BNP leader over attempted murder

A case was filed today against five policemen, including former deputy commissioner (DC) of detective branch (DB) Lalbagh zone Moshiur Rahman and additional deputy commissioner (ADC) Mostafa Kamal for allegedly beating up and attempting to murder BNP leader and former Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Ward 26 Councilor Mir Ashraf Ali Azam.

The other three accused are former Kotwali zone ADC DB Yasir Arafat, Inspector Sher Alam and Sub-Inspector Polash Chowdhury Dipon.

Mir Ashraf Ali Azam filed a complaint in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Arobia Khanam. The court, after recording the statement of the complainant, asked the superintendent of police station, Lalbagh, to file the case as a first information report (FIR).

The case documents show that on July 27, 2023, a group of 20/25 policemen entered Azam’s house. They broke into the house, breaking down the folding gate and beating up the guard. The police allegedly grabbed Azam in front of his wife and son and dragged him out of the room. As Azam resisted, they beat him mercilessly and threw him down the stairs. Azam was seriously injured in the accident as his spine broke after falling.

He was later taken to hospital, where he was treated for a broken spine for six months. The applicant stated that he was still unable to walk normally due to his injuries.
