(International) Ukraine allows foreign mercenaries to serve as officers

Ukraine has allowed foreign mercenaries to serve in the army.

According to local media, such as Kiev Independent, on December 27 local time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed the amendment to the law on December 25.

Foreigners taking part in the war on the side of Ukraine could so far only serve as soldiers or non-commissioned officers.

Ukrainian forces formed an “international army” and accepted foreign volunteers when Russian forces invaded in February 2022.

The International Corps consists of two units under the Army Ground Forces and two units under the General Intelligence Office of the Ministry of Defense.

According to Ukrainian intelligence, more than 50 countries, including the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Australia and Europe, have joined international forces.

Russia’s Defense Ministry, which tracks Ukrainian mercenaries, said that as of March, 3,387 foreigners from 88 countries had taken part in the war, of whom 5,962 had died.
