Dozens dead after bus overturns in Mexico | World news

Authorities say at least 24 people have died after a bus overturned in western Mexico.

They add that the bus collided with a trailer detached from a truck transporting corn.

At least five other people are believed to have been injured in the accident, which occurred early Saturday morning as the bus was leaving Tepic in the western part of the country. Mexico Nayarit state.

In a video posted on social media, Juan Manríquez Moreno, coordinator of the National Guard in Zacatecas, explained that on the highway, the truck’s semi-trailer detached from the bus and then the bus collided with it, causing the vehicle to roll on its right side.

Photos released from the crash site show rescue teams and security forces, including military personnel, securing the area while rescuers worked to recover bodies.

Efforts were underway on Saturday morning to recover body parts that fell into the gorge, a local government official told Reuters.

Rodrigo Reyes Muguerza, secretary general of the Zacatecas government, said in a statement: “We express our solidarity and condolences to all the families and individuals who lost a loved one in this unfortunate accident.”
