Indian River County crackdown on illegal gaming to set an example

VERO BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — While illegal busts in arcades have become a common sight in 2023, they have been fewer and fewer this year — until Wednesday.

That’s when Indian River County Sheriff’s Office (IRCSO) deputies showed up at the Panda arcade, arrested two men, and began seizing the slot machines. The suspects, identified as Jinquan Lin and Jing Guo Yang, were booked on racketeering and illegal gambling charges. They each have bonds worth a million dollars.

The Vero Beach arcade, which is located just off U.S. 1 and 8th Street, was hit Wednesday morning and deputies, along with members of the Florida Gaming Control Commission (FGCC), were on scene as slot machines were removed. The investigation that led to the raid began more than a year ago.

“They knew full well that they had already been reported to be conducting illegal gambling,” said IRCSO Captain Joe Abollo. “We don’t want things like that here. We don’t want that kind of garbage here. We will not tolerate this type of arcades that simply bring poison to our community.”

Vero Beach police release video showing suspect running away after Mulligan robbery

VERO BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) – Surveillance footage has been released of a man fleeing the scene after he was accused of robbing an employee of Mulligan’s Beach House.

The Vero Beach Police Department (VBPD) released surveillance video Monday following the arrest of Sederick Upton for a crime that occurred on October 16.

According to the Vero Beach Police Department (VBPD), officers responded to Mulligan’s Beach House at 1025 Beachland Boulevard, where an employee was the victim of an assault. The victim told officers he was handling money from the company in a locked room when a black man wearing a mask broke into the office.

Officers say the suspect pointed a gun at the victim and began making threats while demanding money. The officer alleges that the suspect began tying the victim’s hands and feet with shoelaces and continued to threaten the victim if she did not remain quiet.

The suspect then fled the scene, stealing approximately $4,900, a watch and a silver bracelet, police say.
