Water pollution in Visakhapatnama ward 67 is causing diseases

The affected people, identified as B. Triveni (35), P. Padmavati (57) and Ramesh, suffered from gastrointestinal problems after consuming contaminated water. They are currently undergoing treatment at local hospitals and their condition is said to be stable.

GVMC Commissioner P.Sampath Kumar explained that the contamination occurred as a result of soil entering the freshwater pipeline during roadworks in the area. Affected pipelines have been identified and require immediate repair and maintenance to prevent further incidents.

The Commissioner assigned the task to the Zonal Commissioner BRS Seshadri by implementing stringent measures to ensure the security of drinking water supplies. Additionally, Dr. Jagadeeshwar RaoThe District Sanitary Inspector visited the affected area to supervise the situation and provide residents with appropriate medical assistance.

GVMC teams have started flushing and sanitizing water pipes in the ward. Tankers have been dispatched to supply safe drinking water to Sai Nagar until normalcy is restored. Public notices warn residents against using tap water for drinking until further notice.

Commissioner Sampath Kumar assured the public, stating, “The health and safety of our residents is of utmost importance. We will ensure that all corrective actions are taken immediately and such incidents are avoided in the future.”

The GVMC also announced plans to intensify inspections of water supply systems across the city, especially in areas where community works are underway. Residents are encouraged to report water quality issues to the GVMC helpline for immediate redressal.

The incident highlighted the importance of protecting public facilities during infrastructure development. Authorities are focusing on preventive measures to ensure an uninterrupted supply of clean drinking water.
