A police investigation in Eldoret suspects the murder of a relative of Willy Bett

Hillary Kiprono Birech has died

Police in Eldoret are investigating the murder of the nephew of Kenya’s envoy to China, Willy Bett.

A 38-year-old man identified as Hillary Kiprono Birech was allegedly attacked by several people at a farm near Eldoret town and hit on the head with a blunt object over allegations of stealing corn.

He later succumbed to his injuries at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital where he was taken for treatment on November 20, 2024.

Retired KDF Warrant Officer II Samson Sang, who is the deceased’s uncle, said they were informed of the death two days after the attack, which was reported at Baharini Police Station in Eldoret.

Sang said they visited the police station where they were informed that the injured man had been brought there and then taken to a health center in Huruma, but was referred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, where he died.

The deceased’s body was later recorded as an unknown person in the hospital mortuary.

“We were surprised that he visited Baharini police station and both hospitals. How come he was listed as an unknown in the mortuary? – posed Sang, who was with his sister Teresa Birech.

Sang said they went to check the body at the mortuary and found that the deceased had deep head injuries.

“We later visited the farm where he was allegedly attacked, but there was no indication of any blood stains at that particular location,” Sang said.

The farm where the deceased was allegedly attacked is located less than two kilometers from his house.

Sang said a young man they found at the farm identified the person who allegedly hit the deceased on the head.

He alleged that when the deceased was taken to Baharini Police Station before his death, the police did not allow the pastor who wanted to meet him.

“We are now demanding proper investigations to find out how and why he died. Those responsible should be held accountable,” Sang said.

The family filed a complaint at Baharini Police Station through OB No. 04/19-11-2024.

Turbo OCPD Patrick Wekesa and District Chief DCI Richard Okeri confirmed that the matter was initially reported to the Baharini Police Station as a case of mob injustice.

“We have recorded some statements and will submit the file for processing so that we can receive guidance on how to proceed,” Wekesa said.

OCPD assured that the case would be thoroughly investigated to find out the truth.
