Ministers’ Message: International Day of Suicide Survivors

Ministers’ Message: International Day of Suicide Survivors

Today, on International Suicide Survivors Day, we remember those we have lost to suicide and the loved ones we have left behind. The effects of suicide on family, friends and communities can be devastating.

Suicide can affect anyone, regardless of age, race, gender or background, and leaves survivors with a complex sense of loss and grief. Our country is facing a mental health crisis – in Canada, an average of 12 people a day die by suicide and many more experience suicidal thoughts or suicide attempts.

There is no one “right” way to deal with such a loss – we all mourn and heal in our own time. By openly discussing suicide, its effects and prevention, we can reduce the stigma and encourage people to seek help when needed.

We are committed to supporting the mental health and well-being of Canadians and recognize the importance of access to key mental health resources, including suicide prevention services and support for survivors of suicide loss. We want everyone to know that help is available if you need it.

This month we celebrate the first anniversary of our founding 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline. If you are mourning someone who has died by suicide, are thinking about suicide, or are concerned that someone else is thinking about suicide, call or text 9-8-8 to access bilingual support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, no matter where you live in Canada.

To strengthen Canada’s collective response to suicide and the promotion of life, the Government of Canada issued National Action Plan for Suicide Prevention.

Healing takes time. Together we can support each other and make a difference so that fewer people die by suicide and people and communities get the support they need.

If you are thinking about suicide, we want you to know that you are not alone and that you can count on help.
