Man accused of assaulting woman in front of child: Westlake Police Blotter

WESTLAKE, Ohio –

Attack: Clemens Road

The Westlake Police Department received a text message at noon on October 11 from a caller who said their friend had been attacked the previous night at the Extended Stay Hotel on Clemens.

Officers found a woman at the hotel who reported that her boyfriend, who was staying at the Extended Stay Hotel in Avon, had stayed with him the previous night. They argued about custody of the children, as a result of which the 29-year-old man pushed the woman behind the wall by the throat in front of the man’s 10-year-old child. The woman said she lost consciousness. Officers documented physical injuries by taking photos.

Officers detained a man at the Avon Hotel and charged him with strangulation and assault.

Improper handling of firearms

On October 12 at 3:15 p.m., police responded to a report of a Ford F450 driving recklessly on I-90 eastbound from Lorain County.

A witness reported that the driver was drinking a 22-ounce beer. Westlake officers stopped a truck on Clague Road and learned that a 30-year-old Cleveland Heights man did not have a valid driver’s license and was wanted on a warrant from the Cleveland Heights Police Department due to prior traffic tickets. The 30-year-old passenger, Cleveland, appeared to be intoxicated and had an open 22-ounce can of Icehouse beer.

Officers found a loaded 9 mm handgun in the glove compartment. The driver had several prior convictions that prohibited him from possessing weapons. The driver was cited for driving under suspension, and both men were charged with improperly handling a firearm.

Parole violation: Detroit Road

A caller on October 12 at 5:15 p.m. reported that a shirtless man was sitting on the grass at the entrance to Westbay Plaza on Detroit Road and rubbing a white substance on his chest.

A 33-year-old Cleveland man told officers he rubbed lotion on his body. The man was visibly under the influence of alcohol and was wanted by Ohio Adult Parole authorities for a parole violation.

Westlake officers arrested him and took him to the Cuyahoga County Jail.

Felony robbery: Clemens Road

A caller at 11:15 p.m. on October 12 reported that a man had been assaulted at the Sonesta Suites Hotel on Clemens.

The victim had bumps and bruises and was bleeding from the head. Officers determined that he was part of a group of co-workers staying in the city for business purposes and had an argument with his roommates over the noise level. Following a misunderstanding, one of the men hit the other in the head with a beer bottle. According to the police, alcohol was the cause of the fight.

Officers arrested a 24-year-old man from Carlsbad, California in connection with criminal assault.

Westlake police officers responded to a resident’s call at 5:15 p.m. on October 13 regarding a dispute between neighbors regarding a parking lot.

After officers arrived, one of the arguing parties, driving a Mercedes SUV, started running away. When ordered to stop, the driver cursed at the officers and accelerated.

Additional officers found a Mercedes parked nearby. The driver, a 76-year-old local resident, was found walking nearby. He appeared to be intoxicated and was field tested. The officers detained a man who was driving under the influence of alcohol and did not comply with the regulations. No charges resulted from the original neighbor dispute.
