A woman sitting in the back seat is dead after the driver hits a tree

It is believed alcohol may have been a factor in the incident after officers said they found open containers in the crashed sedan.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A young woman has died after Houston police say she was in the back seat of a car that crashed overnight in the Memorial District.

The accident occurred just after 1 a.m. Saturday at 600 N. Eldridge Parkway.

The Houston Police Department said the victim and two other women were returning from a night out when the driver lost control of the vehicle and hit a tree.

HPD says the driver and front-seat passenger were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A rear seat passenger was found at the scene.

All women are said to be around 20 years old.

Authorities said they do believe alcohol was a factor in the incident after officers inside the sedan found open containers.

Lt. Willkens said HPD is unsure how the driver became out of control, but investigators are working to determine that factor.
