UN chief condemns “shocking levels of death, injury and destruction” in northern Gaza

UN chief Antonio Guterres said he was “shocked by the shocking number of deaths, injuries and destruction” in the northern Gaza Strip, where Israel has launched a renewed attack that he says is aimed at preventing the resurgence of Hamas.

A statement from the secretary-general’s spokesman said Israeli authorities were denying “repeated efforts” to deliver “essential” humanitarian aid supplies.

Guterres warns that the “widespread destruction and misery” resulting from the Israeli offensive “makes the living conditions of the Palestinian population there untenable,” the statement said.

“This conflict continues to be conducted with little regard for the requirements of international humanitarian law,” it continued.

All sides must “respect and protect civilians” and ensure humanitarian efforts are not hindered, Guterres said.
