49ers QB Brock Purdy underwent a second MRI on his injured throwing shoulder

GREEN BAY — This story keeps getting stranger.

According to FOX’s Jay Glazer, 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy apparently underwent a second MRI on his injured throwing shoulder on Thursday. And this MRI showed no structural damage like the first one.

“So he injured his shoulder against Seattle last week.” Glazer said. “He had an MRI done on Monday. It only showed a shoulder strain. Tuesday. Wednesday. Training. They thought he was keeping the right pace there. And then on Thursday he went out and tried to quit. He just blocked it. So no one knows that he had another MRI done on Thursday but it didn’t really show anything else so they kind of live with the question of when will he get back there just rehabilitate him hopefully he’ll be back next week I just don’t know right now.”

When Purdy initially pulled out of Thursday’s practice, John Lynch went to KNBR in San Francisco and said that a shortened practice was Purdy’s plan all along. In retrospect, it seems that this was not the case.

It appears the 49ers are waiting for Purdy to say he’s ready to play. They cleared him. If he wanted to get a painkiller shot today and ride out the injury, I think the 49ers would let him do it. So they are at his mercy.

If the 49ers lose this game to the Packers, their playoff hopes will be all but dashed. Which means they should probably lock Purdy up for the rest of the season, assuming they lose today. Bringing him back won’t save the season.
