Man charged in connection with UK sexual assault investigation

LOUISVILLE, KY (NOV 56) — An arrest was made in Louisville on Saturday in connection with a sexual assault was reported on the University of Kentucky campus on November 10.

According to British police, 21-year-old Saif Al-Khafaji was arrested by police at the Louisville airport on Saturday evening.

Law enforcement said Al-Khafaji reportedly had a warrant out for his arrest for failing to appear in Fayette County Court. He was charged Saturday with first-degree sexual abuse and second-degree indecent exposure.

Officers said the assault occurred on the night of Nov. 10, while the victim was walking near the intersection of Rose Street and Euclid Avenue, and they did not know the perpetrator.

“The University of Kentucky Police Department is committed to thoroughly investigating crimes of sexual assault and bringing perpetrators to justice,” UK Police Chief Joe Monroe told FOX 56. “Moreover, this arrest reinforces the importance of our Special Victims Unit and technologies such as our security camera system. Nothing is more important than the safety of our campus community, and we will continue to invest necessary resources to enhance safety and security.”

On Saturday, Al-Khafaji was booked into the Louisville Metro Detention Center. Court documents show that in April he was arrested on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University and charged with harassment without physical contact and stalking.

British police said any victim of sexual assault is encouraged to contact the department’s Special Victims Unit.
