Three Indians died after following a Google Maps route that led their car to a bridge under construction and the vehicle fell into a river in the Bareilly district of Uttar Pradesh, India Today reports.

The incident took place on Saturday when the victims, two of whom were identified as Vivek and Amit, had started their journey from Gurugram and were heading to Bareilly to attend a wedding. The men used Google Maps to get there when GPS led them to an unfinished viaduct.

The car ran over the bridge and fell 50 feet into the shallow Ramganga River.

The next morning, locals found a damaged car and three dead men. They informed the police, who reached the spot and took the bodies for post-mortem.

“A damaged car was found in the Ramganga river at 9.30am today. The police were informed and arrived at the scene. When police arrived, they saw Wagon R on the river, which had probably been hired as a taxi. The car drove onto an unfinished bridge and from there fell into the river,” the police said.

“The bodies were found and taken for autopsy. The identities of two people, Amit and Vivek, have been confirmed. Further details regarding the identity of the third are ongoing,” police added.

Family members of the victims blamed concerned officials for the incident and wondered why the bridge was not completed and barricades were not installed at one end of the structure.

They said an FIR should be lodged against the building department for alleged negligence.
