A team of Andhra Pradesh Police reached filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma’s residence in Hyderabad on Monday after he failed to appear before them for questioning in a case related to posting offensive content on social media against Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and his family members.

Ongole Rural Police officers arrived at the residence of the controversial director who is likely to be arrested in the case. When the police found out that the filmmaker was not at home, there was a great drama. According to reports, he left for Coimbatore.

RGV, as it is widely known, the filmmaker did not appear before the police on Monday.

He spent four days trying to appear before the police last week. There are allegations that he tarnished the reputation of CM Naidu, Deputy Prime Minister Pawan Kalyan, Information and Technology Minister Nara Lokesh and others.

On November 11, the police registered a case against the director based on a complaint lodged by local Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader Ramalingam. The complainant alleged that RGV had late last year made offensive remarks against CM Naidu, his son Nara Lokesh, other family members and actor-turned-politician Pawan Kalyan during the promotional activities of his film ‘Vyuham’.

The director posted inappropriate comments on social media. Case under Art. 336 section 4 and art. 353 section 2 of the BNS Act, as well as Art. 67 of the IT Act was lodged against RGV at Maddipadu Police Station.

On November 13, the police informed the filmmaker and ordered him to appear before the investigating officer at the Maddipadu police station. RGV approached the Andhra Pradesh High Court, which refused to grant interim relief. The court made it clear that it could not order an order similar to granting bail in an action to set aside a judgment.

RGV requested that he be temporarily exempted from appearing before the investigating officer. When RGV’s counsel told the court that the petitioner was facing arrest, the judge said that the petitioner should apply for bail.
