School faces difficulties after student dies from suspected foodborne illness – SABC News

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane is expected to visit Thabisile Primary School in Diepkloof, Soweto today.

This is due to death of an eight-year-old second-grade student who fell ill and died on Friday last week after eating cookies allegedly purchased from a local spaza shop.

Gauteng Department of Education spokesman Steve Mabona said support teams were also deployed to the school.

β€œThe MEC will then visit the family of the deceased student to express condolences. Psychosocial support teams have also been deployed to the school to provide students and staff with the necessary support.”

It also followed the burial of five-year-old Siyabonga Mnisi, also from Diepkloof, who fell ill and died after eating snacks allegedly bought from a local spa shop.

Mnisi was scheduled to graduate from Grade R on the same day he passed, but his school decided to postpone the graduation ceremony in his honor.

The little boy’s death sparked fury from the Diepkloof community, which has since closed some local spa shops in the area.
