Federal officials based in North Carolina are recalling dog treats that may be contaminated with salmonella bacteria.

Karolina Prime Pet Inc.of Lenoir, North Carolina, is recalling 400 16-ounce bags of Hollywood Feed Carolina Made Chicken Chips dog treats Food and Drug Administration – wrote in an online post.

Salmonella can infect animals that eat the product, and there is also a risk to humans if they handle contaminated products, especially if they do not wash their hands thoroughly after handling the products or any surface exposed to the products, the FDA said.

The potential for contamination was discovered after testing by an independent laboratory found contamination in a related, unreleased batch of the same product.

No illnesses have been reported related to the problem.

Is salmonella dangerous to dogs and humans?

Animals infected with salmonella may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some animals will only have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain.

Salmonella may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever. It can also cause more serious conditions, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms.

The product comes in a 16-ounce purple and black bag marked on the back with lot number 20051324L2 and an expiration date of 11/13/25.

This is the only batch number identified as potentially contaminated.

What should I do with the treats?
