Somerville man charged with aggravated assault on a Newark officer during a drag racing stop

NOWARK, NJ — An 18-year-old Somerville man was arrested after allegedly injuring a Newark police officer while trying to flee the scene of a drag racing accident early Sunday morning.

Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda Sr. announced the arrest of Wyatt Bowden, who faces charges including aggravated assault of a police officer, fleeing and possession of a weapon (vehicle). The incident occurred around 1:02 a.m. at Frelinghuysen Avenue and Miller Street, where officers were responding to reports of erratic driving.

According to police, when officers arrived, people began to flee the area. Bowden reportedly ran over a Newark officer’s foot while trying to escape in his vehicle. The injured officers were taken to the University Hospital, where their condition is stable.

“This arrest should alert adventurous drivers that the streets of Newark are completely off-limits to anyone planning to hold drag races here or display their dangerous stunts,” said Director Miranda, emphasizing the risk such activities pose to public safety.

Bowden was arrested at the scene and remains in police custody while authorities continue their investigation. Police have warned that accidents involving dangerous driving will be punished quickly and severely.
