A 13-year-old student is believed to be the latest road accident fatality in the country.

SSP Traffic Director Mitieli Divuana says yesterday afternoon the victim was a passenger in a vehicle along with four other people who were traveling along Princess Road in Tacirua when a truck driven by a 21-year-old man allegedly hit their car.

SSP Divuana says the truck driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle, which resulted in him veering into the opposite lane and causing an accident.

All passengers of the vehicle were transported to CWM Hospital, where the victim was pronounced dead upon arrival.

SSP Divuana says two other serious accidents were reported yesterday on Mead Road in Nabua and Daniva Road in Nasinu.

During the first crash on Mead Road, it is believed the suspect lost control of the vehicle and struck a vehicle driven by a 52-year-old man.

The suspect remains in the CWM hospital.

Last night on Daniva Road, a vehicle driven by a 39-year-old man allegedly hit an eight-year-old student.

It is alleged that the victim suddenly crossed the road and caused the accident.

He was taken to CWM Hospital, where he remains in hospital.

SSP Divuana says in light of current weather conditions and warnings issued by the Fiji Meteorological Office, drivers and pedestrians must take all necessary precautions for their safety.

The death toll on national roads now stands at 54, compared to 73 in the same period last year.
