Oklahoma with three weekly SEC award winners

Oklahoma with three weekly SEC award winners

Oklahoma 24-3 win against Alabama on Saturday night was truly impressive.

At least that’s what the committee that selects the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week says.

The Three Sooners received awards this week for their play against the Crimson Tide.

Running back Xavier Robinson was named SEC Defensive Rookie of the Week R. Mason Thomas was named SEC Co-Defensive Lineman of the Week and Right Guard Febechi Nwaiwu was named SEC co-offensive lineman of the week.

OU didn’t just upset the favored Crimson Tide for two touchdowns, the Sooners dominated No. 7 Bama from start to finish. It was OU’s first home victory over an AP Top 10 opponent as an unranked team since 1990.

Robinson, a freshman from Oklahoma City, was a star with a career-best 107 yards on 18 carries and scored two touchdowns. Three weeks ago, coach Brent Venables he said the plan was to change Robinson’s shirt, but Robinson canceled it and played in just his fifth collegiate game against the Tide.

Robinson also caught four passes for a career-high 20 yards to pace Oklahoma’s offense. Playing in just his fifth career game (the third in which he recorded a carry), he averaged 5.9 yards per rush against an Alabama defense that entered the game allowing a season-high 3.6 yards per rush. Robinson ran for 40 yards for the first time in the game, which was his longest run of the season and the second longest in the history of the organizational unit operating this year. His touchdowns came from 18 yards (giving OU a 10-3 lead in the second quarter) and 1 yard (giving OU a 17-3 lead in the third quarter). His effort helped the Sooners maintain a 34-11 to 25-49 advantage in time of possession, and his 3-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-2 with 2:00 minutes remaining allowed OU to shave off the final 6:53 of the game clock.

Thomas, a junior from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, had three total tackles against Alabama, including 1 1/2 tackles for loss, one quarterback sack and two QB hurries. On the season, Thomas made 20 tackles, but 10 1/2 of them were tackles for loss, for which he added eight sacks.

During one of his QB rushes, Thomas punched the quarterback in the shoulder Jalen Milroecausing the ball to go up in the air and stay there intercepted by a teammate Woodie Washington. Thomas’ play helped spark an OU defense that prevented Alabama from scoring a touchdown for the first time since 2011 and held the Crimson Tide to its fewest points since 2004 and its fewest offensive yards (234) since 2014. Thomas, a player from Ft. The Lauderdale, Florida product leads OU and ranks fifth in the SEC with 8.0 sacks and 12th with his 10.5 tackles for loss (both career highs).

Nwaiwu, a fourth-year junior from Coppell, Texas, was the highlight of OU’s offense, which led him to 257 rushing yards and allowed just one sack all night. The Sooners’ top five receivers are all new this season and have struggled with consistency and cohesion, as OU has allowed 42 sacks this season, but their best form was against Bama.

Those were the fastest yards allowed by the Crimson Tide in 26 games, and it was just the ninth game in the last 20 seasons that the team allowed at least 250 rushing yards. Nwaiwu and his offensive linemates helped the Sooners become just the fifth team to have two players rush for at least 100 yards against Alabama since at least 1996. OU gave up just one sack and didn’t allow a turnover until 3:56 of the third quarter.
