A hiker dies in the White Mountains after falling through icy conditions

LINCOLN, N.H. (AP) – A 44-year-old New Hampshire man died while hiking in the White Mountains after falling on the ice, according to state officials.

The state Department of Fish and Game reported Saturday that Christopher Huyler of Littleton, New Hampshire, did not return from hiking in the Coppermine Trail area of Franconia. Huyler called his wife early in the morning and said he was going to the area after checking the conditions for the winter ski season.

A search involving about 20 rescuers began late Friday, and Huyler’s body was found early Saturday at an altitude of 2,800 feet.

Authorities said Huyler “suffered a significant fall on icy terrain” but provided no further details. They said Huyler was prepared for hiking, including wearing so-called microspikes, and was “an avid outdoor enthusiast who enjoyed the White Mountains of New Hampshire at all times of the year.”

Fish and Game officials used Huyler’s death to remind the public that winter conditions had settled in the mountains and that hikers should prepare for the hike with 10 essential items — a map, a compass, warm clothing, extra food and water, a headlamp, kindling, a first aid kit, whistle, rain/windproof jackets and trousers, and a knife.
