YOUNGSTOWN — Richard J. Armstrong Jr., 46, who underwent numerous psychological evaluations after being charged with robbery and assault in connection with a 2020 incident at the Boardman Hotel, was sentenced Monday to five to six years in prison.

Last month, prosecutors asked Mahoning County Superior Court Judge Anthony D’Apolito to sentence Armstrong to six to seven and a half years in prison, but the judge told Armstrong he would give him five to six years unless Armstrong commits violations while awaiting sentencing.

The judge also warned Armstrong, formerly of Youngstown, that upon his release from prison he would seek probation for a period of 18 months to three years and could return to prison for two and a half years if he did not comply with the terms of his probation.

Armstrong received credit for four years and three months in prison while awaiting trial, so he could be released in about nine months.

Armstrong faces charges after he followed a man to the Days Inn in Boardman and forced him into a hotel room at gunpoint.

Boardman’s police report stated that the victim told police that Armstrong had two guns pointed at his head. The victim offered Armstrong money, but Armstrong did not accept it. The victim was eventually able to leave the hotel room and contact Boardman police.

In October, Armstrong pleaded guilty to robbery, assault and possession of a firearm. Other charges against him were dismissed in exchange for his guilty plea.
