A woman died after undergoing laser skin removal surgery at a private hospital in Tianjin, China. South China Morning Mail reported.

Liu (27) underwent her tenth laser treatment at Jinmen Dermatological Hospital on October 21, 2024, and died 10 days later on October 31.

Laser treatments they usually involve directing short pulses of laser beams directly to the skin surface to remove discolorations such as freckles, wrinkles and even tattoos.

I fell into a coma after being treated with an anesthetic cream

On October 21, 2024, during treatment, the doctor applied an anesthetic cream to her.

Liu reportedly became dizzy and fell into a coma shortly thereafter.

She then went into shock and had a cardiac arrest.

She was then sent to the intensive care unit of Tianjin Medical University, where she later died.

Liu reportedly died of a brain hernia.

Wanted mole removal procedure

Liu apparently does neurofibromatosisa genetic disease causing changes in skin pigmentation, which may even lead to tumors of nervous tissue.

According to her husband, Liu had huge, dark moles all over her body and spent more than 100,000 yuan (S$18,600) at Jinmen Dermatology Hospital to have them removed.

She has been undergoing treatment in hospital since 2020.

Before her October 21st therapy session, she went to her May 2023 session.

Liu’s husband suspects that an anesthetic was responsible for her death.

Unbearable pain after sessions

Liu’s mother claimed that her daughter stopped the sessions several times due to “unbearable pain”.

Liu’s body has been sent for an autopsy and authorities are investigating the incident.

The hospital’s deputy director said that if he was proven guilty, the hospital would be held responsible.
