The accident occurred in the southwestern part of the city, just before 6 p.m. last Wednesday.

Investigators say a gray or black four-door sedan with a male driver struck a 54-year-old woman who was crossing the street near Western Avenue and Marquette Road.

The driver fled and the victim died from his injuries.

On Monday, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified Tanja Annzionetta Saffordd.

Police have published photos of a car wanted in connection with a fatal accident.

Chicago police continue to investigate. No arrests have been made.

The family said Monday Safford was simply supposed to go to the dollar store. But when Grandma didn’t come home, they said they knew something was wrong.

“We had a movie night,” said niece Kyara Safford. “And when she didn’t come back, I informed my dad like, ‘My aunt is going away for over an hour.’ And that’s where it started.”

The loved ones returned to the intersection, just three blocks from Tanja Safford’s home, on Monday with heavy hearts.

“What will our Thanksgiving look like for whoever did this to her?” said Brother Thomas Safford. “She cooked for us every holiday. She makes our cakes. We won’t even eat them this year. That’s what it means to us. That’s what it means.”

Tanja Saffordld’s family didn’t find out where she was until a day later.

“We couldn’t be there to say goodbye to her or anything,” daughter Brittany Rogers said.

Now the family is demanding justice.

“Just give yourself over. We forgive you. Come on, that’s someone’s mom, please,” son Damion Martin said.
