Lyle Menendez and Rebecca Sneed broke up “a while ago” and now she’s dating a 21-year-old

Lyle Menendez and his wife, Rebecca Sneedquietly ended their marriage after more than 21 years together, but she remains a key figure in his life despite rumors of a cheating scandal, which Sneed says are baseless, PEOPLE has learned.

“Lyle and Rebecca have been together for some time,” a source with knowledge of the situation told PEOPLE, adding that Sneed continues to support his ex by managing his social media accounts and assisting with his ongoing legal disputes.

The source also addressed Lyle’s romantic relationship with Milly Bucksey, a 21-year-old student from Manchester, England. The source says Lyle and Bucksey bonded after she wrote to him in prison, but she “only visited him in prison once.”

Reports of Lyle and Bucksey’s affair surfaced earlier this month, prompting Sneed to release a statement confirming her split from Lyle. She posted an update on a Facebook page she manages for him.

“Guys! This is NOT a cheating scandal. Lyle and I have been separated for some time but remain best friends and family,” Sneed wrote on November 21. “With his support, I continue to run his Facebook pages and am forever committed to the constant fight for Lyle and Erik’s Freedom that has been evident throughout the years.

Sneed and Menendez, 55, married in 2003 after dating for ten years. Meanwhile, Erik Menendez he has been married to Tammi since 1999.

The Menendez brothers were convicted in 1996 for a 1989 crime the murders of his parents, Jose and Kitty Menendezand sentenced to life in prison without parole. They have consistently maintained that the killings were an act of self-defense after years of sexual and emotional abuse at the hands of Jose, which they believe Kitty enabled.

Lyle and Erik’s legal battle continues. the brothers are now awaiting a decision on their possible injuries, which could enable them to be granted parole. On Monday, November 25, the judge postponed the scheduled acquittal hearing to January 30.

During a Nov. 25 preliminary hearing at the Van Nuys Courthouse West, Judge Michael Jesic said he needed to review “17 boxes” of evidence and rescheduled the Dec. 11 hearing for Jan. 30 and 31.
