Two firefighters out of 15 were injured in a two-alarm fire in Inwood, Manhattan

INWOOD, Manhattan (WABC) — A two-alarm fire injured more than a dozen people, including two firefighters, when an Inwood apartment building burned down Tuesday morning.

At 8:24 a.m., a fire broke out in a building on West 204th Street

FDNY crews were able to bring the fire under control at 10 a.m. It caused extensive damage to two apartments.

“Initially, about eight units fought the fire. The fire turned into a second alarm. There were many victims there. Heavy smoke and hazardous conditions at all times,” said FDNY Deputy Chief Sean Murphy.

Fifteen people were injured, including two firefighters. Among the injured, one person is in a serious condition. Most of the injured suffered smoke poisoning.

Eyewitness News spoke to a man who said there was a fire in his apartment.

“I heard these noises behind the radiator, little crackling sounds, then I pulled out the bedside table and it started smoking. And then the fire, I don’t know how it got into the closet, everything is connected with wires. The wires are about 100 years old,” said resident Leonard Rzepnicki.

The services inform that the fire covered the entire building.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
