Australia’s National Basketball League (NBL) has banned one fan for life and another for 10 years after he got into a fight with players during a game.

During the fourth quarter of Adelaide’s loss to Melbourne United earlier this month, two fans seated courtside got into a fight with 36ers players Montrezl Harrell and Kendric Davis.

This followed on-court scuffles between Adelaide and Melbourne players.

The NBL suspended Harrell for three games for his involvement in the incident, and Davis was suspended for two games.

The NBL said the Department of Integrity had completed an investigation into spectator behavior at the match.

“One spectator received a lifetime ban and the other a 10-year ban from all NBL matches at all venues.

“The NBL is and always will be a family-friendly sport and we will not tolerate any behavior that is contrary to this,” NBL chief executive David Stevenson said in a statement.

“We hope this sends a clear message that sitting courtside during NBL games is a privilege.

“One of the greatest things about basketball is that we get to be close to talented players, so we will always strive to protect and preserve that experience.

“We commend the quick action of club officials who intervened to attempt to defuse the situation between Adelaide players and fans.”

Melbourne United coach Nick Truelson said the ban was justified.

“I would like to reiterate that Melbourne United does not tolerate or condone inappropriate behavior by fans at our matches.

“We are committed to maintaining the most inclusive and welcoming environment in Australian sport, while ensuring the safety of players, staff and fans.

“We have assisted the NBL throughout the investigation and support the findings and sanctions imposed on the spectators involved.”
