Baker Mayfield files a nearly million lawsuit against his father’s company, NBC New York

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield has filed a federal lawsuit against a finance company owned by his father, James Mayfield, accusing the company of failing to repay nearly $12 million taken without his authorization.

The 29-year-old NFL star filed a civil lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas on Friday for the amount of $11.7 million.

The lawsuit alleges that between 2018 and 2021, Camwood Capital Management Group transferred more than $12 million from Mayfield and his wife “without his authorization, proper documentation, or proper accounting of the transaction” to a subsidiary called Texas Contract Manufacturing Group.

The lawsuit says Camwood allegedly used the money “however she wanted,” including to finance acquisitions or cover general operating expenses.

“During the period that Plaintiffs’ funds were transferred to Defendants, Plaintiffs were the primary source of financing and capitalization for Defendants. In return, the Plaintiffs received nothing,” the lawsuit reads.

When Mayfield learned about it and questioned the company, Camwood allegedly evaded Mayfield’s inquiries and “invented fictitious explanations for his actions,” according to the lawsuit.

Camwood did not immediately respond to NBC News’ request for comment on Tuesday.

NBC Contributor WFLA-TV of Tampa reported that Camwood is owned by James Mayfield and that his son Matt Mayfield – Baker Mayfield’s brother – has an interest in it.
