AHL players engaged in wild fight

A regular season match between AHL teams Detroit Red Wings and Wild Minnesota descended into chaos as a wild fight broke out. The Grand Rapid Griffins and Iowa Wild met in a match that produced one of the craziest scrum clips in recent years.

The madness in between Red Wings and the Wild’s AHL teams started by attacking Griffins forward Elmer Soderblom, sparking a conflict between the teams. From that moment on, the mood began to intensify and only escalated.

After the whistle, it continued throughout the match, and when Griffins defender Willaim Lagesson tied Wild forward Adam Raska, the fight looked more like a WWE or MMA-style fight than a regular shoving match.

Lagesson knocked Raska to the ground and then brutally choked the Wild forward. When blocked, Raska clearly hits. After Raska gives in several times, two officials come to break up the argument and Lagesson relents.

The clip is absolutely wild. Take a look at this one shared by account X Griffin’s nest. What makes this whole situation even crazier is the fact that at the top of the frame you can see the skates of one of the referees, seemingly doing nothing until another official comes over.

The AHL can sometimes feel like the Wild West, and this was a perfect example. As comedian and actor Rodney Dangerfield famously coined, “I went into a fight and a hockey game broke out!” However, according to the on-ice officials, this incident was a classic example of brutal behavior and Lagesson was given two minutes in the penalty box.

The match result was 26 penalty minutes. The Griffins were also victorious, defeating the Wild by a score of 5-2. However, I highly doubt anyone will talk about or remember the outcome of this game after Lagesson may have been the first AHL player to successfully force another player to punt while holding for a submission.
