Lodge suicide attempt stopped by Michigan State trooper

FOX 2An attempted suicide by a man suffering from a mental health crisis in Lodge was stopped Tuesday morning by a Michigan State Police trooper.

An officer responded after a man was reported walking on the highway near W. Chicago at 9:20 a.m. – then located via MDOT cameras – and was seen driving through traffic.

The officer finally managed to come face to face with the man under the Chicago Blvd overpass who was holding a pocket knife to his throat. According to MSP, the man cut his neck and then made a deeper wound on his left wrist, which caused heavy bleeding.

After he refused to drop the knife, the soldier fired a stun gun at him, causing him to drop the gun. The man got up and ran a short distance before he was knocked down and handcuffed.

The soldier immediately placed a tourniquet on the patient’s arm to stop the bleeding. He was taken to a local hospital where he is receiving medical and psychiatric care.

“Great work by the officer who used his training and experience to arrest the man and get him the help he needed.” said MSP Lt. Mike Shaw.

Before the incident, the suspect was involved in intentionally causing a car accident on a nearby street. After surviving the accident, he ran to the highway.

Investigators say the man refuses to identify himself and they are working to identify him using a fingerprint scanner.
