A BC man linked to the death of an Alberta woman has been sentenced to eight years

A British Columbia man convicted of assault and arson in connection with the death of an Alberta woman has been sentenced.

Philip Toner was sentenced to eight years. He has two years and nine months left after serving his sentence.

Toner, 44, was originally charged with second-degree murder in the death of 35-year-old Brenda Ware.

In August, he pleaded guilty to lesser crimes, including armed robbery and arson.

Ware, who lived on a rural property between Sundre and Cremona, Alta., went missing in May 2021.

Her body was found near a vehicle later that month about 50 kilometers east of Radium, British Columbia, off Highway 93 in Kootenay National Park.

Toner was also arrested in May 2021 in British Columbia’s Central Okanagan region
