A samurai sword arson suspect accused of setting fire to two homes in West Harris County is now facing charges

Harris County, Texas (KTRK) — A woman says the sword-wielding man accused of setting fire to her West Harris County home refused to confront her.

Jackie Gray said her cameras detected movement around 4 p.m. Wednesday, prompting her to go outside to investigate.

Surveillance footage shows Gray’s neighbor, Phi Le Nguyen, walking to her home with a can of gasoline.

Gray said she found a smoking can leaning against the wall of her home.

“I just saw you and I have cameras,” Gray can be heard telling the suspect.

“Yes? What are you going to do?” – he replies.

Before going to Gray’s home, the video shows Nguyen going to a neighbor’s house with a can of gasoline.

This house was also set on fire.

Both Gray and her neighbor were able to put out the fires, but surveillance footage shows Nguyen returning to Gray’s home and pouring gasoline on her driveway, possibly trying to start a second fire.

“He actually started pouring it under my truck. Then he started pouring it all out in front of the driveway and everything else,” Gray said.

Once he’s done, he can be seen standing in Gray’s driveway. At one point he swung his sword, causing Gray, Gray said, to almost fall victim.

“He was approaching with a sword in his hand raised in his hand as if he was going to attack me,” she said.

When Harris County sheriff’s deputies arrived, they reported being treated with the same hospitality.

Nguyen was charged with aggravated assault for threatening Gray and his deputy.

“He walks into the garage, still waving at the officers, and that’s when they finally take him down,” Gray said.

As of Friday, Nguyen’s bond increased to $200,000. He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday morning.
