The legal community has been in mourning following the sudden death of Wilfred Mutubwa, a renowned lawyer and academician.

Mutubwa, who was serving as Dean of the Faculty of Law at Mount Kenya University, tragically collapsed and died in his office in Nairobi on Tuesday, November 26.

He was reportedly participating in a virtual court hearing when he complained of pain and asked for a short break.

Moments later, the don collapsed and could not be revived. His office is near Nairobi Hospital, but efforts to save him have failed.

The cause of death remains unknown, the body was taken to the mortuary pending an autopsy.

How was Mutubwa praised?

The news of Dr Mutubwa’s death has left his colleagues, students and the wider legal community in shock.

Known for his commitment and expertise, Mutubwa was a strong supporter of alternative dispute resolution (ADR).

He previously served as President of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators-Kenya and was a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague.

President Law Society of Kenya (LSK), Faith Odhiambo, expressed deep sadness at the loss, describing Mutubwa as a pioneer in the legal profession.

“It is with deep sadness that I have learned of the untimely death of Dr. Wilfred Mutubwa, Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Mount Kenya. The great success he achieved during his short but eventful period as Dean of the MKU School Of Law is a testament to his unstinting commitment to mentoring and advancing the legal profession. We express our sincere condolences to all his family, friends and colleagues for this loss. May he rest in peace,” she said.

MMUST lecturer found dead

In a related report, Ebulonga village was left in mourning after the death of an MMUST lecturer Jairus Omuteche, whose body was found near the Yala River after a three-day search.

Omuteche went missing after visiting his farm, which raised concerns when a freshly cut fiddle was found near the Jordan River.

His body was found at a river crossing and taken to the Itando Mission Hospital mortuary, where police are investigating his death.
