Tension rises in Nellore after murder of transgender leader Hasini

Tirupati: Following the murder of Hasini, a prominent transgender leader, the situation in Nellore was tense late on Tuesday evening. The incident took place at Tapathopu in Kodavalur mandal where unidentified assailants attacked her to death.

According to reports, Hasini, who was in her 30s, had visited a temple in Parlapalli to have darshan and was returning home when the attack occurred. Unidentified assailants attacked her mid-journey with knives before fleeing the scene. Seriously injured Hasini died on the spot. “Hasini had performed rituals at the temple and was returning home when she was attacked by people who were reportedly following her,” said sub-inspector Koti Reddy.

Hasini’s body was then taken to the mortuary of the Government General Hospital, sparking widespread protests and demands for justice. Hundreds of transgender people, including from Nellore, Tirupati, Vijayawada and Tamil Nadu, gathered at the hospital to stage a protest. They demanded immediate action against those responsible for the crime. In response, police erected barricades and deployed additional forces to maintain order and prevent the situation from getting out of control.

Initial investigations suggest the murder was the result of a dispute between rival factions in the transgender community. “Preliminary information indicates that the attack was planned, which suggests that the perpetrators planned it. The motive for the crime could have been internal conflicts in the transgender community,” said the sub-inspector.

The police identified potential suspects and initiated an investigation into the matter.
