Governor Kelly Announces Million for Victims and Survivors

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Kansas Governor Laura Kelly announced Wednesday that more than $10 million in federal funds will go to community-based organizations and local and state agencies that provide services directly to crime victims and survivors. These funds come from the federal Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) Assistance to Victims of Crime program.

Several Sedgwick County agencies received funding, including the Wichita Children’s Home, the Wichita Sexual Assault Center, the Wichita Police Department and the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office. In total, Sedgwick County agencies received nearly $1.8 million; Wichita Children’s Home received the highest amount in Sedgwick County, just under $300,000.

VOCA grants help organizations provide essential services that include judicial advocacy and criminal justice support provided by law enforcement and prosecutors. Other services include crisis counseling provided by sexual violence and mental health centers, court hearings provided by child welfare centers, and shelter, transportation and transitional housing provided by domestic violence programs.
