An Alabama A&M football player has died at the age of 20 after being injured during an October game

Some Alabama I AM University The redshirt freshman football player died after sustaining a serious head injury during a game against Alabama State in October.

Medrick Burnett Jr., 20, suffered multiple bleeding and brain swelling following a collision during a competitive game, requiring emergency surgery.

“Medrick was more than an exceptional athlete; was an extraordinary young man whose positive energy, leadership and compassion left an indelible mark on all who knew him,” said Dr. Paul A. Bryant, athletic director Alabama A&M in a statement from the school.

According to his sister, Dominece James, the California resident underwent a craniotomy as doctors tried to save his life. He previously needed a tube to relieve the pressure on his brain.

Burnett appeared in seven games during his first season with the Bulldogs before his injury.

A GoFundMe campaign started by James for medical expenses has raised more than $27,000, including a $1,000 donation from former Grambling State football coach Hue Jackson.
