Bengaluru: Indiranagar police are searching for a 22-year-old man accused of murdering his girlfriend, vlogger Maya Gogoi, in a company apartment on November 26. The suspect, identified as Aarav Hanoi, allegedly spent the night with her dead body after which she fled the scene.

Investigators said Aarav and Maya had been in a relationship for six months. The pair spent two days together in the apartment before the situation escalated into a brutal murder. CCTV footage shows Aarav leaving the apartment in panic around 8:20 a.m. on Tuesday.

The police suspect that the crime was planned. Aarav allegedly brought an old knife to the apartment and ordered nylon string online shortly after checking in. Although initial reports suggest he intended to dismember the body, he instead fled the scene, leaving Maja’s remains behind, police said.

After the murder, Aarav went to the Majestic railway station and switched off his mobile phone to avoid detection. Authorities believe he may have fled to Kerala. Two special teams were formed to trace him under the command of Indiranagar police station inspector Sudarshana. Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage showing the taxi route that Aarav took to leave the crime scene.

Maya’s sister, who lives in HSR Layout, revealed that Maya had sent her a message before the tragedy, informing her that she would not be coming home due to an office party. “On Sunday, she sent a message again saying she was organizing a party and wouldn’t be coming home,” her sister said.

Maya’s autopsy has been completed and police are intensifying their search for Aarav.

“We are trying to unlock Maya’s mobile phone with the help of forensic experts,” a police official involved in the investigation told HT. “We suspect that the motive for the murder was a breakup initiated by Maya. The two were in a relationship for six months. Aarav switched off his phone after committing the crime and our teams are tracking him,” the officer added.

The case bears terrifying similarities to a murder on September 22, when a 29-year-old woman of Nepalese descent was killed by her lover, who dismembered her body into more than 30 pieces. The accused, hailing from Odisha, later died by suicide in his village after fleeing the spot.
