A Maryland prison inmate was killed in his cell by another inmate

Police said the 28-year-old inmate was murdered in his cell by another inmate serving a sentence in the same facility.

The inmate, identified as Robert Warren – a state prison inmate serving a sentence at the North Branch Correctional Institution in Cumberland, Maryland – was pronounced dead in his cell on Monday by emergency medical personnel, according to a statement from the state of Maryland. Maryland authorities did not say how the man was killed or how long they suspect he had been dead when his body was discovered in his cell, but did confirm that Maryland State Police investigators “are continuing to investigate the death of a state prison inmate in Allegany County.” .

“The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit was contacted by investigators from the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigations Unit (DPSCS IID) regarding the death of an inmate,” according to the Maryland State Police. “The autopsy results from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled Warren’s death a homicide.”

Investigators from the State Police Homicide Unit continue to investigate, with assistance provided by crime scene technicians and investigators from the DPSCS Internal Investigation Unit.
