OKCPS teacher arrested after student injured in classroom

CITY OF OKLAHOMA (KFOR) — A John Marshall Enterprise Middle School teacher is on paid leave, facing aggravated assault and battery charges after a classroom play sent a student to the hospital.

Court records detail the charges against 41-year-old Kiera Smith. On November 21, Smith allegedly “got into a fight” with a 13-year-old student during a social studies class. That’s when court documents say the victim, another 13-year-old student, stood up and tapped Smith on the shoulder.

“Smith turned and grabbed the victim, lifting him off the ground and slamming him into the ground. As a result, the injured party broke his collarbone,” we read in the court documents.

The documents go on to say, while video footage shows the victim lying on the ground helpless and in pain: “Smith walks up to the victim, stands over him, raises his hands up, looks down at him and says loudly, ‘Something else!'”

Smith then allegedly returned to her desk.

The teenager was taken to hospital. He suffered a broken collarbone and was placed in a sling.

Court records show Smith downplayed the ordeal to investigators, saying she “often ‘play fights’ with students at school” and added, “We really don’t play fight with the victim. He just took it upon himself to join in.”

Documents show Smith claimed the student was able to move his hand and fingers and then returned to work. However, investigators say cellphone video evidence proves this is not true.

Smith was arrested Tuesday and booked into the Oklahoma County Jail for aggravated assault and battery.

Her bail is set at $50,000.

This isn’t the first time Smith has been arrested. In 2018, when she was a teacher at the primary school. Martin Luther King Jr. she was accused of sexual battery against a fellow teacher.

On Wednesday, Oklahoma City Public Schools sent KFOR the following statement:

“On November 26, OKCPS was notified of the arrest of Kiera Monique Smith, a teacher at John Marshall Enterprise Middle School. As is typical in such situations, Ms. Smith was placed on administrative leave.

The district is cooperating with law enforcement and is conducting a full internal administrative investigation into this matter. As always, the safety of our students and staff is our number one priority.

As this is a personnel matter, we are unable to provide further comment at this time. Inquiries regarding this case and/or allegations should be directed to OKC Police.”
